Get Started in Legends Car Racing

New to Legends cars? This FAQ covers the basics of joining the New England Legends Car Tour — from what a Legends car is to how to get on track with NELCAR.

What is a Legends car?

Legends cars are purpose-built, 5/8-scale replicas of classic American coupes from the 1930s and 1940s. They use a sealed Yamaha motorcycle engine that produces roughly 130HP, a short wheelbase, and INEX-spec rules that keep competition close and costs more predictable than many other forms of racing.

Who can race with NELCAR?

NELCAR ( New England Legends Car) welcomes new and experienced drivers of all ages that meet INEX and track requirements. Many competitors come from karting, street stocks, motorcycles, or other short-track classes — and plenty start with little or no prior racing experience.

How do I get started?

Coming to a NELCAR event as a spectator is a great way to meet drivers and learn what it takes to start racing. Most drivers will allow you to sit in their cars. Another option is to call or visit the team at GO Motorsports Shop who run the NELCAR series. Call them at (207) 298-9438 or visit the shop 1126 Long Plains Rd in Buxton, Maine. Check out the Events page to find the next race near you!

How much does it cost?

Buying a brand new Legends car can cost roughly $20,000. If you need help with final setup/assembly and want optional parts the price can increase. Used cars are always available and can range from $5,000 to $20,000 and more depending on condition and spares that are included. Because the cars and engines are spec-based, Legends racing is often more approachable and costs are more predictable than building and racing an open-rules stock car. After purchasing the car you'll need to enter a race! Oval race days can be relatively inexpensive and will only require an INEX membership and pit pass. The costs vary from track to track.

Do I need a license and special rules knowledge?

Drivers do not need a drivers license but will require an INEX Membership. Review the current INEX rulebook and NELCAR rules before you compete, and ask your local dealer if you are unsure about safety gear, tech inspection, or class eligibility.

What safety equipment do I need?

Expect to need an approved helmet, racing suit, gloves, shoes, and a proper head-and-neck restraint, plus a correctly installed seat and belts in the car. Exact requirements follow current INEX and track rules, so verify the latest specifications before you buy gear.

Where can I get help or parts?

Find your local dealer. GO Motorsports shop in Buxton Maine is the largest distributor of Legends Car parts in the world and run the NELCAR series. They are at the track with parts, help and friendly advice during each event. If you are not close to them they can help you find a dealer or team closer to you as well.
